You can now run the real Claude Code with a completely free AI model that lives on your own computer. No monthly AI bill, no usage limit, and your code stays private because the model runs locally through Ollama.
This is not a Claude Code clone. We keep the Claude Code agent harness and replace its paid Anthropic model with a local model running through Ollama. I’ll show you how to install Ollama, choose the right coding model for your computer, connect it to Claude Code, and test it on a real coding job.
The fastest method takes one command:
ollama launch claude
I also compare three different ways to run a free coding agent:
• Ollama for a private model running entirely on your machine
• FreeLLMAPI for combining free API tiers from multiple providers
• OpenCode for a simpler open-source Claude Code alternative
Local models are slower and their quality depends on your hardware. If privacy and ownership matter, Ollama is the best route. If you want more free models and do not mind using cloud providers, FreeLLMAPI gives you more choices. If you want the simplest setup, OpenCode avoids most of the configuration.
What’s covered:
• Installing Ollama on macOS, Windows, or Linux
• Choosing a local coding model based on your RAM
• Connecting Ollama directly to Claude Code
• Running Claude Code without an Anthropic API bill
• Testing the setup on a real coding task
• The tradeoffs between local speed, privacy, and model quality
• Ollama vs FreeLLMAPI vs OpenCode
Chapters:
0:00 Make Claude Code Free and Private
0:44 What You’re Actually Replacing
1:46 Step 1: Install Ollama and Choose a Model
4:33 Step 2: Connect Ollama to Claude Code
5:37 Step 3: Test Your Local Coding Agent
