More than 4,000 plaintiffs across the country are suing drugmakers, claiming serious harms from GLP-1 drugs, raising questions about how common such side effects are.
Millions of Americans take these drugs, yet there isn’t much reliable data about serious side effects like sudden blindness, pancreatitis and gall stones. Ozempic’s maker, Novo Nordisk, says serious conditions are exceedingly rare in clinical trials. The FDA tracks side-effect reports filed by doctors, patients or companies. NPR found about 2,000 cases of pancreatitis and 1,000 cases of sudden blindness out of 190,000 GLP-1-related filings since 2024, but those reports are unverified, and doctors often don’t report because it’s hard to be sure the drugs caused the problems.
