The Time Machine earned an Academy Award nomination for its impressive makeup effects, making it one of the more visually ambitious sci-fi films of the early 2000s. But the version that reached theaters was only part of the story. Did you know that the Morlocks originally had something far more terrifying planned for Mara after capturing her? Or that there was an alternate ending that was eventually deleted because it created a major plot hole? Today, we’re uncovering 10 hidden truths about The Time Machine 2002, including disturbing theories, hidden Easter eggs, deleted ideas, and why the 9/11 attacks caused one of the movie’s sequences to be cut.

In the finished film, after Alexander fights and kills the Uber-Morlock inside the time machine, he accidentally travels more than 600 million years into the future and discovers one of the bleakest images in the entire movie. Earth has become a red wasteland covered with enormous Morlock structures and buildings. This suggests that even though Alexander successfully killed the Uber-Morlock, the Morlocks eventually still managed to win and dominate the entire Earth, including the Eloi. However, what many people do not know is that this was not Simon Wells’ original plan. Originally, when Alexander traveled 600 million years into the future, what he saw was not a Morlock wasteland, but an “Eloi Paradise”. In this version, the distant future suggested that the Eloi had survived, escaped the Morlocks’ control, and apparently built a peaceful world of their own. Simon Wells had even already filmed the sequence and completed much of the CGI work, and the studio had already shown a glimpse of it in the theatrical trailer, where Alexander arrives in a beautiful world filled with magnificent buildings, a futuristic city, and lush natural scenery. However, as the movie got closer to release, Simon Wells realized that this created a major plot hole. If Alexander traveled forward and discovered that everything eventually turned out fine, why would he go back and risk his life to save Mara? Alexander needed to see that the Morlocks would ultimately dominate the Earth, giving him a reason to return and change what he could. So the finished movie leaves us with a grim future where the Morlocks inherit the planet.

More than two decades later, The Time Machine still stands out not just because of its vision of the future, but because of how many strange ideas, deleted scenes, and darker concepts were left behind during production. If you had a time machine, would you go back and change your past, or travel forward to see your future? Let me know in the comments below.
